Alumni have a unique opportunity to encourage positive change within colleges and universities. Their donor dollars are absolutely vital to endowment growth and often provide the funds for the operating budget. This gives alumni particular influence on university policy. Here are a few ways to exercise that influence:
- The next time your alma mater asks you to donate, ask how that money will be managed. As a donor you have a right to know that your money is being used in line with your values. Just writing a letter with your check saying “I’d like to make sure my money is being managed responsibly” can make a difference—and writing a letter and having it signed by your 10 best college buddies can make a huge difference.
- Contact us for a sample letter, or to learn more about current investment practices by your alma mater. You might be able to directly support student activists!
- Join the REC Alumni Network. Alumni groups with an emphasis on social responsibility are increasingly looking at college endowments. For example, see the responsible investment campaign from the University of Rochester Alumni for Social Responsibility. To learn more about joining the REC Alumni Network, please contact us.
