Responsible Endowments Coalition Position Description Development Director
The Responsible Endowments Coalition, a nonprofit social justice organization, is seeking a Development Director to join its leadership team. This is a unique opportunity for a development professional desiring to work with a strong Executive Director at a young organization with high growth potential and extensive fundraising opportunities.
The Responsible Endowments Coalition is devoted to empowering students and other university members to foster social and environmental change through their university endowments. By challenging their institutions to invest responsibly and proactively, students have the power to confront corporate abuse such as sweatshop labor, environmental destruction, and discrimination, and to encourage accountability to the communities in which they live and learn, by supporting community development and participation. The Responsible Endowments Coalition provides the tools, resources, and networks to help students lead successful responsible investment campaigns on their campuses. BASIC FUNCTION
The Development Director is responsible for raising the contributed revenue required to support The Responsible Endowment Coalition’s annual budget. The Development Director is also a key strategist, collaborating with the Executive Director, Organizing Director and the Board to design and implement a multiyear fundraising strategy to ensure the future of the Responsible Endowments Coalition and its ability to carry out its mission.
The position requires researching and pursuing prospects, expanding the individual donor base, conducting regular appeals to individuals, developing partnerships with like-minded organizations, developing and maintaining strong relationships with funders, researching and writing grant proposals, organizing events across the country, and maintaining overall funder compliance.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Refine and manage existing strategic fundraising plan to meet short and long term fundraising goals
- Lead efforts to develop major donor giving program
- Develop and implement plans to grow overall individual donor base including prospect research, board development, yearend appeal and annual benefits
- Oversee the planning and management of special events for both fund raising and cultivation purposes
- Engage in foundation research and proposal writing
- Maintain systems to ensure proper management of information, relationships and deadlines
- Work closely with the Executive Director to integrate development, program and financial management efforts to improve efficiency and enhance utilization of organizational resources
IDEAL EXPERIENCE
The following experience and qualifications are preferred:
- Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree a plus
- Three to five years of successful and progressively responsible fundraising experience, or otherwise a strong demonstration of the skills required to do effective development work
- Solid understanding of foundation research, relationships and grant writing
- Experience with individual donor development, including identifying, cultivating and securing gifts from major donors
- Broad understanding of supporting development services: prospect research and tracking, gift processing, and stewardship
- Exceptional organizational skills and detailed oriented, including record keepingsystems development/management and project management
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Superior interpersonal skills; an ability to work effectively with people at all levels of the organization, Board members and donors
- Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, fundraising databases, e mail, Internet and presentation software applications
- All candidates should be selfstarters (strong initiative and motivation), with the ability to work independently and excel in a demanding fastpaced environment
- Specific experience with social justice funders and organizations desirable
- Experience as an organizer desirable

- A creative problem solver with a proactive, optimistic approach to overcoming challenges or barriers; and
- A sense of humor, and an ability to maintain focus and perspective under pressure.
Salary: DOA
Location: Applicants must be willing to live in the San Francisco Bay Area, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore or Washington D.C. (the choice is yours), with occasional travel required.
