| Student Group Affiliation |
|
REC has two forms of membership. One is for student groups on campus and the other is for members of Committees on Investor Responsibility. Below you will find details regarding affiliation for student groups. To learn about joining our Committee Members Association for Committees on Investor Responsibility, click here. Why affiliate? Becoming a REC affiliate gives your group access to all of our great resources, including our valuable network of responsible investment professionals, organizers, and economic justice organizations. REC staff are available to answer your campaign, organizing, or finance questions and are happy to reach out to our contacts to provide you with the support, credibility, and knowledge you need to work with any audience. We are also happy to come to your campus or work with our allies to being the right person to speak at your school. Affiliation also gives you access to our media resources, including a newsletter and blog where you can broadcast your campaigns, and to our media database service and our assistance pitching your story to national outlets. Affiliation also makes you eligible for travel scholarships to attend our conferences and events. Interested? Here's the low-down on affiliate roles and responsibilities: We welcome any student group in the United States or Canada to become an affiliate of REC. Affiliates are asked to affirm our Principles of Unity and Values Statement by October 1st each year. This allows the coalition to affirm that affiliates are operating in accordance with shared values and principles and to maintain an accurate record of membership. You can download these documents here to discuss them with your group. Once that's complete please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to affiliate. REC also requires affiliates to make a commitment to anti-oppression. We encourage all affiliates to examine their practice for ways they can better support collective liberation, sometimes defined as the end of oppressive practices associated with gender, race, class, age, ability, sexuality, etc. We encourage autonomy in how affiliates approach this issue but regularly host anti-oppression trainings and encourage all affiliates to take advantage of them or to call upon us to set one up for their group. REC encourages all affiliates to submit a monthly update for inclusion in our monthly newsletter. This helps us communicate developments across our movement and provides members with access to each other for networking and counsel, one of the most important functions of REC. Please submit monthly updates to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by the 15th of each month. Members of affiliates are also eligible for leadership positions within REC through the Steering Committee. Elections are held annually at the national conference each fall. Steering helps to determine the shape and tenor of our movement and is charged with electing student representatives to the REC Board of Directors. If you are interested in running for the Steering Committee please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for more information. REC does not require but strongly encourages affiliates to send a representative to at least one REC event a year. This will not only strengthen your relationship to the movement it will also provide your group with greater skills and a deeper knowledge about the major developments and topics in our movement. Affiliates are eligible to receive travel and housing scholarships for these events. Similarly, REC does not require but strongly encourages affiliates to host events in their region or otherwise to support the work of REC. This can mean many different things: helping us to grow our movement by attracting new members, supporting us financially (usually by getting funding from your school for events, materials, etc.), or even serving as a spokesperson for the coalition or responsible investment. We encourage you to think creatively about how your campus work can plug into the national work.
