Handbooks
STARS (Sustainability Tracking Assessment & Rating System) Produced by AASHE this is the manual for colleges and universities to rate their sustainability. It includes a section on investments. Responsible Endowments Coalition is a partner on this project.
Unlocking the Power of the Proxy Originally written for foundation trustees by As You Sow, this provides an excellent overview to the importance of proxy voting.
Handbook on Responsible Investment Across Asset Classes A comprehensive overview of responsible investment practices, produced by the Boston College Institute on Responsible Investment. This serves as a good accompaniment to REC’s trustee handbook.
A Student Handbook on Community Investment by Colleges and Universities This handbook is a good accompaniment to REC’s community investment handbook. Written by Mike Levien, a Williams College graduate who was the driving force behind the community investment program there, this resource focuses on how students can start a campaign for community investment.
Campuses Beyond Coal Toolkit
This handbook was written by a Sierra Student Coalition Regional Organizer with our support. It provides an excellent overview for ways campus activists can challenge the role that coal plays in providing energy or financing for universities.
This is a guide produced by Green America on how individual investors can structure their portfolios to assist with community development. It offers a useful background on the nature and advantages of community development financial institutions.
Reports
The College Sustainability Report Card The report card measures several different criteria for sustainability on college campuses, including endowments. The report card has been a very useful document for benchmarking and comparing schools. Note that Mark Orlowski, founder of the Sustainable Endowments Institute which publishes the report card, was a co-founder of REC and remains a great friend of the coalition!
Incorporation Labor and Human Rights Risk into Investment Decisions A great primer on the financial impact of investments in companies with poor labor and human rights records, from Harvard Law School.
For an extensive selection of financial reports related to investment risk caused by climate change, visit the Pew Center on Global Climate Change.
